Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 June 2026

Skim or Dive (“Skim or Dive,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a personal ebook reader available on the web and as a mobile app. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Skim or Dive app and the website at skimordive.com.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and (optionally) a display name. If you sign in with Google, Facebook, or Apple, we receive your email address and basic profile name from that provider — we never receive your password for those accounts.
  • Books you upload. When you import an EPUB or text file, we store the text of that book so we can display it, generate detail levels, and continue it. We do not access files on your device that you have not chosen to import.
  • Content you generate. The condensed/expanded detail levels and the “One More Chapter” continuations created from your books are stored against your account so you can read them again.

Information collected automatically

  • Reading activity. Reading progress, bookmarks, and the detail levels you select, so your library stays in sync across devices.
  • Usage and diagnostic data. Basic, non-advertising information needed to operate the service — for example, the volume of AI processing performed for your account (used for usage limits and billing) and error/crash logs to keep the app stable.
We do not collect precise location, contacts, advertising identifiers, or browsing activity in other apps. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.

2. How we use your information

  • To provide the core reading, variable-detail, and chapter-generation features.
  • To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
  • To sync your library, progress, and generated content across your devices.
  • To enforce usage limits and process any payments you make.
  • To diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and improve reliability.
  • To respond to your support requests.

3. AI processing and third-party services

Skim or Dive uses a small number of service providers (“processors”) to operate. They process data only on our instructions and only to provide their service to us.

Provider Purpose What it receives
OpenAI Generating detail levels and chapter continuations Portions of your book text needed for the request
Railway Application and database hosting Your account data and stored content (at rest)
Google, Facebook, Apple Optional “sign in with” authentication Your email and basic profile name (only if you use that option)

We do not allow your content to be used to train AI models. Book text sent to OpenAI is processed under API terms that prohibit using API data to train their models. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

4. Legal basis and your rights

Where data-protection law (such as the GDPR or UK GDPR) applies, we process your data to perform our contract with you (to provide the service), to comply with legal obligations, and for our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and reliable. You have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • correct inaccurate data;
  • delete your account and associated data (see below);
  • export your data in a portable form;
  • object to or restrict certain processing;
  • lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

5. Deleting your data

You can delete your account at any time from within the app (Profile → Delete account). Deleting your account permanently removes your account, your uploaded books, your reading progress, and the detail levels and chapters generated for you. Some records may remain in encrypted backups for a limited period before being overwritten, and we may retain minimal information where required to comply with legal obligations (for example, records of payments).

You can also request deletion by emailing privacy@skimordive.com.

6. Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete the associated data as described above. Diagnostic logs are kept only as long as needed to operate and secure the service.

7. Data security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and stored on managed infrastructure with access controls. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

8. Children

Skim or Dive is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

9. International transfers

Our providers may process data in countries other than yours, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) for those transfers.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and revise the “Last updated” date. Material changes will be communicated in the app where appropriate.
